Jang Won-young Wins Partial Victory in Defamation Case Against YouTuber

K-pop sensation Jang Won-young has achieved a partial victory in her legal battle against YouTuber Sojang, who was ordered to pay 50 million won ($34,890) in damages for spreading false rumors. This decision comes after an initial ruling that required the YouTuber, identified only by her surname Park, to pay 100 million won. The controversy began in October 2023 when Jang took legal action against Park for defamation, leading to a court ruling in her favor. Park's channel, which no longer exists, was notorious for spreading unverified claims about Jang, including allegations of a lawsuit from another girl group member and a romantic involvement with a male celebrity.

In addition to Jang's lawsuit, Park faces legal challenges from Jang's agency, Starship Entertainment, and has been indicted for disseminating false information about several Korean celebrities. Earlier this month, Park received a two-year prison sentence with a three-year probation for her actions. Between October 2021 and June 2023, Park uploaded 23 videos containing rumors about seven celebrities, including Jang and Kang Daniel, leading to multiple defamation lawsuits. Last year, Park was also ordered to compensate Kang Daniel with 30 million won, a decision she is currently appealing. High-profile cases involving BTS members V and Jungkook, who are seeking 90 million won in damages, further highlight the ongoing legal repercussions of Park's actions.
